Risk Taker? Print Email
Sunday, 04 March 2007

Have you taken any risks lately? Have you ventured outside your comfort zone to attempt something seemingly difficult or impossible? I'm not referring to careless or foolish risks. I'm talking about calculated risks. A risk that's given some thought and discussed with the wise people in your life. Have you done this lately? Be honest with yourself. For me, the hard part is not making the decision, but moving forward through the fear and discomfort of taking the risk. What's holding you back? What's keeping you from moving forward? Maybe God wants you to be in a place where you must rely on Him.

Last Monday, I started a new job. It was tough to leave my employer of 6 1/2 years, but it was the right decision. One thing is for certain. In 20 years, I won't look back and regret that I didn't take a risk.

Last week I made the decision to leave pastoral ministry after 22 years for a different kind of ministry. A ministry to United Methodist pastors, denominational, and lay leaders. I'll be a web editor for a new independant United Methodist web site that will be kicked off in a couple of months (www.churchandworld.com). "The easiest way to miss nothing," is our motto. I hope its been a calculated risk and not a foolish one. It does seem like a long shot. It has been incredible hard to move forward through the fear and discomfort like you say. This move is a total step of faith that I have to rely on God for every step. Your piece was encouaging to me. I also didn't want to have regrets in 20 years that I at least didn't give it a shot. Thankfully it's good to hear that I'm not alone!

Thanks Sarah and Kevin for the comments!

Kevin - I'll have to check out the site. It's tough sometimes to take that step of faith. I know for me that even if I made the wrong decision, I still wouldn't regret giving it a try. Overtime, I seem to regret my inaction instead of my failures.
